We continue to make excellent progress eastwards. It took 40 hours for the passage from Sardinia to Sicily, much of which we spent drifting along at 4 knots on a broad reach using the light northerly winds . We made landfall just north of Palermo at dawn on Sunday morning and were struck by the beautiful rugged and mountainous scenery. Palermo is a very old city full of beautiful squares, tightly packed historic buildings, with lots of statues and arches. However the whole place is rather dusty, scruffy and in need of a lot more tender loving care.
That evening must rank as one of the most memorable of our trip so far. Just imagine being in Italy on the night they won the Football World Cup! We watched the match in the open air in front of a big screen ( a white sheet suspended between 2 lampposts ) just outside a little cafe. The atmosphere was just wonderful and we shared the crowd's highs and lows as Italy fought back in the match. Our fellow revellers' passion and antics were memorable, reaching an incredible climax after that final penalty when Italy won. Someone then played the National Anthem followed by Queen's " We are the Champions " both of which were roared out with incredible feeling. The town then just went ballistic with everyone jumping into their cars and motorbikes; they were all flying Italian flags and constantly blaring their horns as they drove round and round. We could still hear the racket at 6am the next morning!
We now continue along the north coast and through the Straights of Messina, hopefully avoiding mythical Scylla and her fearsome whirlpools.
We then face another 2 day crossing of the Ionian Sea to Corfu, where we hope to find another internet cafe to re-establish communication.
