We are now enjoying a few days off in Gibraltar, although our stay has been rather extended by the strong easterly " Levanter " winds which unfortunately for us are blowing in entirely the wrong direction. However, we have put the time to good use; we have had 2 mega shops at the local Safeway supermarket, and have made full use of the duty-free shops downtown. On Thursday evening we watched the Ceremony of the Keys. This military parade dates back to the time of the Great Siege, where the military governor personally ensured that the gates to the citadel were secure each night. The whole affair was splendid, with the troops in best uniforms accompanied by a full military band. This is exactly the sort of pageantry that we British excel at.

On Friday we cycled across the border into Spain and hired a car. We retraced our way back along the coast to look closely at some of the magnificent villas that we had seen from on board. Our thoughts about finding a bargain were dispelled quickly after one glimpse in the local estate agent's windows. Out of the wind it was very pleasant down by the seaside, with some very dramatic views of Africa across the Straights Of Gibraltar.
