This was a very hard week, mainly because we had to beat our way eastwards
against sustained strong winds and the rough motion of the boat exacerbated
Terry's sciatica which unfortunately has reappeared after several months.
However, our folding bicycles are a godsend and allowed him to get out and
about whenever we were in port. We stopped at Fuengirola, Motril and then
had 2 days off at Almeria which was very pleasant and which we last visited
on our honeymoon 33 years ago. The next night was very momentous, when, in
the harbour at Garoucha, we dragged our anchor at 1am in the middle of
thunder and lightning and gusting 25 knot winds. Needless to say the rest of
the night's sleep was very fitful to say the least.
The following night ( 10th June ) was spent at Cartagena which we thought
very lovely and where we hope to spend more time on our way back.
We continued to fight our way against Force 6 and 7 winds towards
Santa Pola and Alicante, because we planned to fly home on 14th June
to attend Nic (our godson )and Julie's wedding. We were both very
anxious about finding somewhere to leave the boat for 10 days
because all the marinas were very full, but thankfully, the marina staff at
Alicante managed to find us the last remaining berth. The marina fees here
are exceptionally expensive, almost twice what you pay in the Solent, but we
only really relaxed when we were finally tied up and then watched the winds
become even stronger.
Our time at home was wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed the wedding and it was
lovely to see both our girls again. Jenny drove straight to our house at
Fareham after a 27 hour journey back from Australia where she and Andy had
won a competition to follow the England rugby team on tour.
We fly back to Alicante on 22nd June to be joined by Eric Haines as we
continue our voyage through the Balearics and on to Sardinia.
