Although it was very windy for most of the time we spent in the Tobago Cays, our stay there was great. As the strong winds were forecast to continue for the rest of the week, we decided to move across the sound to Union Island. This is a lovely, small, rather rugged and unspoilt island, little affected by tourism, where the locals are all very friendly and have to work hard to make a living.
We enjoyed just taking in the atmosphere, shopping for basic foods, fruits and vegetables. We came ashore on the first night to eat superb snapper and lobster in a small restaurant; the only down-side was that in the darkness on the way ashore, we ran into shallow water and sheared the propeller on the outboard. After the meal we had to row about half a mile back to the boat in pretty strong winds, but we all agreed that it was still worth it.
The next day, after repairing the outboard motor, we again went ashore and hiked to the top of Fort Hill which overlooks the anchorage. The views were spectacular and it was very impressive looking down at the aircraft making their approach to the island's small runway across the hilly terrain.
We left Union Island at first light on Wednesday morning and had a lively 8 hour sail to Grenada. En route, we continued to be lucky with our fishing and managed to catch a 4lb Wahoo. This is another excellent tasting fish, but we took great care in getting it on board as it has a jawful of fearsome teeth; once again chef Andrew showed superior culinary skills by preparing 'plastered fish compromise' which was an extremely tasty meal.
We plan to spend a few days here in St Georges harbour, Grenada, before moving round the coast to Prickly Bay.
