Our routine now starts with a leisurely breakfast and mid-morning
departure, finding a deserted cove for lunch and a snorkel and then making
for a little harbour for the night.
After transiting the Levkas Canal, we visited Scorpio, the island once owned
by Aristotle Onassis and viewed the little beach where Jacky Kennedy liked
to go swimming. We had nights at Spartakhori on Meganisi, Vathi on Ithaca and
Fiskardho on Cephalonia. We visited Port Leone, a delightful village that
was abandoned after the 1953 earthquake and is still quite a poignant place
where the only building still intact is the church, which is still looked
after by the former inhabitants.Vathi and Fiskardho are both very lively,
picture-postcard places, full of tourists and you have to be in harbour by
4pm at the latest if you want to find a mooring; needless to say crossed
anchors have to be expected as there are so many boats crammed into the tiny
harbours.
Eric's last night with us was in Sami on Cephalonia, where our farewell meal
in the Mermaid Taverna was the best of the trip so far. You go into the
kitchens to see the traditional Greek dishes on offer; the owner describes
them for you and it is difficult to make a choice. Terry's lamb with
potatoes was just fantastic.
After an early start, just the 2 of us headed for the Gulf of Corinth and we
spent the night at the busy port of Patras. We continued to Itea, where we
hope to make a trip to the ancient site at Delphi as well as catch up with
the laundry. We will then transit the Corinth Canal which promises to be
spectacular, but at 150 euros is quite expensive.
