Sicily to Corfu

We left Palermo on 11th July and enjoyed a gentle 24 hour cruise along the
north coast of Sicily. That night we experienced a magical sunset, as the
blood red sun made the whole sea turn red as it sunk slowly below the
horizon; shortly afterwards the moon rose and it too was red to begin with.
Shortly after dawn we entered the Straits of Messina which were quite busy
with shipping and the many ferries dashing between mainland Italy and
Sicily. In the middle of all this traffic we spotted 2 very strange fishing
boats searching for swordfish. They had very long bowsprits which supported
masts that were about 30 metres high. At the very top of the mast, in a
crow's nest, were 2 or 3 fishermen controlling the boat from on high.
After a night in Reggio di Calabria, we continued the 60 miles around the
"toe" of the Italian coast to Rocella Ionica, a lovely little marina, where
we spent a day catching up with the laundry.
We anticipate that it will take about 40 hours to cross the Ionian Sea to
Corfu in Greece.
