Jaco and Christelle left Los Roques on the 11th for Isla Barlovento with 'Be
As You Are' so they could spearfish the reef that afternoon together. We
stayed on in Sarqui until the following day because we wanted to speak to
Susie after her scan. We'd have like to have stayed longer, the snorkelling
was good, plenty of fish and lobster, but Songerie moved on and we wanted to
spend some time together before they returned to PLC. So we departed for
Isla Barlovento the next day.

Many cruisers pass through this archipelagico and some stop and leave the
their boat names in stone or wood on the windward side of the island. We
added Chaser2's name to the list. There were many boat names we recognised,
cruisers we had met in other parts of the Caribbean some years ago.

The fisherman here have decimated the Conch since last year, there is a
mountain of empty Conch shells near the beach. Taking Conch is not allowed
but seeing as they have taken 1000's we dived for a couple for ourselves, we
only take what we eat.

We met with Russell and Nataya on the beach and had a great evening barbeque
celebrating Jacos long gone 50th birthday and our 40 something anniversary
and anything else we could think of.'Be As You Are' soon left for Bonaire,
and Songerie and ourselves stayed on and moved our boats closer to the reef.

Jaco and I dived on the windward side of the island for some fish and
lobster and Christelle came along with her camera. Down at around 7 metres
Jaco saw a huge Grouper, maybe 2 metres long, it's the biggest fish I've
ever seen, we didn't try to shoot it of course. Grouper is nice to eat but
there was enough meat to last till Christmas. I'm sure Christelle got a
photo so it should appear on their blog.

A couple of days later we barbequed on the little beach near the end of the
reef, it's not a good beach, there aren't many beaches in Barlovento, but
the snorkelling is good and the birdlife and turtle spotting too is good.

We stayed in Barlovento for maybe a week or 10 days before deciding to move
on to the second of the Aves islands, Isla Sotovento.
