We're still here in Carriacou, the weather is a little dull these last
couple of days, so we'll stay here till it brightens up. We don't do wet
weather sailing if we don't have to. Temperatures are still good around 82
degrees F.
The photos show the anchorage at Carriacou, and the haulout facility
together with the Yacht Club. It's a beautiful yard and clubhouse, prices
are reasonable too. Nobody here wants to rip you off, the people are
friendly and helpful. The first foto shows a floating barge anchored in the
bay. It's a sunset hangout bar, good place to meet other cruisers and prices
are bar prices. It's currently run by Brad and his wife/girlfriend. Their
occupation is aboard cruise ships, they tend to get a contract for 4-5
months aboard ship then return to Carriacou aboard their sailboat for the
rest of the year and cruise where they want. They just happen to like
Carriacou and have stayed on and spend a few hours tending the Angels Rest
floating bar each day. Great way to spend your life!
We took a walk yesterday to find a post office. There is one in Hillsborough
but we were told of one nearer, not in Tyrrell Bay where you may expect but
up a dirt road to a very small village, about a mile away. This village has
about 5 rums shops and a post office. We only wanted to post a letter, a
couple of booklets for James. The very helpful lady took the letter and said
she sold stamps, she's holding the letter in the palm of her hand, moving it
up and down, we told it for Europe, she said the problem is we don't have
any scales at this office to weigh the letter and it's a bit heavier than a
regular letter. So we'll have to go to Hillsborough. We bought a few stamps
anyway for postcards, and walked back taking the scenic route to Tyrrell
Bay. There are some beautiful houses here on the side roads, lovely
countryside, green and fertile; a big farming and fishing community.
Today Tuesday, it's still a bit overcast, so we'll hang around and maybe
take a bus into Hillsborough and then come back to Paradise Beach for a cool
down, or a cool downer.
We have a good internet connexion here, no rip off prices, it's free, they
just ask for a donation for the local children's school. This kinda sums up
the attitude for the people on this Island.
There aren't too many Rastas either, and consequently the drug culture is
non existent, it's a different government too from the other Islands and
they don't permit it.
Mind you there are a few Rum Shops, kinda small shack type bars, in fact
there is apparently over a hundred Rums Shops and only one petrol station.
So maybe drinking and driving isn't a problem because you can't get the
fuel!
Someone said to us that this is the only Island where they regularly see a
Pelican sitting on a Buoy with a seagull sittin on the Pelicans head. That's
a pretty laid back attitude and is reflected in the people of the Island.
They are very pleased to meet and see you, but if you don't come to the
Island they don't worry.
