Our holiday started on the 26th October, we sailed from
Cachicatos to Cumana to await the arrival of Susie Rob Billy and Berny aswell as
our grandaughter Evie Marie (Sharkbait). They all arrived on time in Cumana
albeit a little knackered, but the chageover times were good, not too much
hanging around.
Next day we sailed back to Cachcatos to stay landbased for a
week in a beach house and introduce our family to some of our
friends.
Windsurfing was good off the house although we did have some unusually
light winds. Sleeping in the hammocks was fun for all. We arranged a day trip by
boat to San Antonio for shopping and lunch and we also took a drive into the
market town of Cariaco once or twice.
After getting everything unloaded to the house we went to Sven and Eva's
beach pizza bar, a lovely veneue for beer, pizza and a relaxing evening, before
returning to the house for an early night.
Next day we dingied down to Medregal Village, the haulout yard, for a walk
around the grounds and swim in the pool. It's a beautiful posada (minihotel) and
a haulout yard for many boats. We had previously planned to eat in the
restaurant that evening and Saturday BBQ night. But we were told
on Friday they had no meat fish or sausages of anykind so we cooked in the
house. The owner Jean Marc disappeared without telling anyone and left the
restaurant in the incapable hands of one of his staff. We know the freezers are
full! Sven and Eva were quick to come to the rescue and said we could eat
with them each night, but it wasn't necessary, we had plenty in the house and
aboard Chaser . There are now two or three other venues,
cruiser hangout type places to eat , drink and relax within 500 yards of
Medregal .They are each open one or two days a week. Basically they are private
clubs for sailors but membership is free. They are great places, you
can choose between Pizza, Hamburger, Ribs, Cornish pasties, steak
pies and Roti's.Have a relaxing evening with cheap beer and good food on the
beach. Jean Marc of Medregal seems to think it is taking his trade, but of
course it can only encourage more people to visit the area. Also cruisers can't
afford to eat or drink at Medregal prices every night so an alternative is good
for the area. The lack of Medregal restaurant facilities therefore didn't cause
us a problem, we had a good time in the Golf of Cariaco, the week went
quickly so we soon made our plans to sail to the offshore islands. Next time
Isla Tortuga and Islas Los Roques.
