We had done a bit of exploring on Sunday, visiting Fort Delgres, an old fort covering a vast area which is part of the UNESCO "slave trail". Louis Delgres was born in Martinique, the son of a Frenchman and a local woman. He rose to senior rank in the French army, returned to Guadaloupe, but then led resistance to French suppression of slaves and eventually, along with 300 followers, blew himself up rather than surrender. Afterwards we went to the beach - black sand - and Sarah had a swim.
Anyway, the 12 miles to The Saintes was bumpy, wind peaked at 32 knots almost directly on the nose, and the sea was about 2m swell. We motored the whole way, with Rosemary and Sarah sheltering behind the spray hood, and James behind the wheel getting soaked by spray. When we arrived we had the welcome sight of Ian from Spray, in his dinghy ready to take our ropes at a mooring buoy.
We'll stay here a couple of days - we have rented a buggy for Wednesday - before moving on to Dominica.
