We will have stayed almost 10 days in Dominica 5 days in
Portsmouth and 5 in Roseau. On Saturday
and Sunday we rented a 4x4 to explore the island further. Dominica is the most spectacularly beautiful
island and our descriptions can never do it justice. Rain Forests, waterfalls, colourful vegetation, beaches with white and with black
sand, it really is fantastic. Our trip
took us to the Emerald Pool, Trafalgar Falls, Soufriere and Scott’s Head as
well as the road around the south of the island (we were really glad we had
splashed out on a large automatic 4x4 – the roads were so tortuous and steep
that navigating them was quite a
challenge). On Saturday we ate at Riverside Cafe at Bout Sables Bay part of the
Citrus Creek Plantation which had eco lodges for rent – Creole dishes were
tasty and cheap. Sunday we ate at
Papilotte which is a restaurant, hotel, tropical garden, and wilderness retreat. Again good food although slightly more
expensive. On Sunday night we had
drinks and nibbles with Charlie and Carol on their boat Montana Sky (fitted
with washing machine, microwave and lots of other conveniences) . They are divers but have had some bad
experiences with their sailboat so are going to sell it. Today first thing we
returned the car and then visited the museum in Roseau which gave information
about the geology of the Island and history of its people . Cocktails at the Fort Young Hotel (which was
completely destroyed in the hurricane of 1979) and then back to the boat for a relaxing
swim and preparing to leave tomorrow for
Martinique. We are leaving the Leeward
Islands and going to the Windward Islands
We have resolved to return next year and spend longer here walking
some of the trails and enjoying the island and its amazingly friendly people. A couple of pictures which can only begin to
capture the beauty of the country and also a picture of a school bus crushed by
a tree in 1979 - Hurricane David.
