We are still not in a well defined clockwise wind circulation and we skirt successive small highs. In the night close hauled heading NE but now on a broad reach heading ENE, almost directly for the Azores. 10 Kn of wind making 5.5 Kn comfortably.

Last night we made a casserole using corned beef, rather than chicken or real fresh beef. It wasn’t bad, despite years of prejudice against corned beef. We prefer it to vacuum packed meat although we know how good that is. A venison casserole however would be first choice. The ship is fairly dry but in the evening we share two small cans of cold beer - magic.

The watch system is working well on a 3 hour rotation through the 24 hours, sleeping well, eating well as we slowly draw the Azores closer. We’re about 600 miles north of the BVI’s and about 150 miles east. More than 1/4 of the way after 5 days and with luck we’ll speed up if we get consistently north of the highs.

We’re getting used to the Monitor self steering and although we can get it working with more precision it’s done all the steering for the last 3 1/2 days. Not using the Autopilot has meant we are power self sufficient, no engine charging, with the solar panels and wind charger keeping ahead of the lights, fridge, chart plotters and navigation instruments and the water maker. Pretty pleasing.

The forecast gets us falling into a hole in 24 hours but the forecast is changing every day so we’re just aiming to sail as comfortably and fast as possible in the direction of the Azores.
