We are running right up the northern edge of the SE trade wind. This means we are still subject to low pressure systems, a band of rain and squalls and, when the trade wind does blow, it is much lighter than shown on the weather gribs. Last night we gently motored against a west wind until the trade wind picked up again at dawn.
The light wind and lumpy sea means it is impossible to drive Vega up to a respectable passage speed. We get about four knots on average. Still, after 7 days of a seven day predicted passage we have passed the half way point!
Currently we have the poled out staysail and (un-poled) genoa to take us with the wind. Unfortunately this is taking us too far to the north where we will run into unstable air again. Hmm, as I write the wind has gone more to the east which is favourable to us but is dying as the sun sets. It could be another frustrating night!
