Despite my previous message we actually left Portishead at 1200 on 10th having decided that we were too tired to make the 11pm lock out of Portishead on the Thursday. So we left yesterday and had a lovely sail past Cardiff, Bridgwater Bay and Minehead on a fresh southerly breeze. Set up the Hydrovane self steering and it worked like a dream at the first ask!! The Red Arrows displayed over Cardiff airport as we passed - it felt like a second official send -off! In the evening there were amazing cloud shapes and patterns across the sky and fortunately the thunderstorm that these were associated with passed behind us. We have never herd such long, drawn out rumbles of thunder. As it became dark the wind veered round to the west and we had to motorsail in order to make headway in the right direction. The wind rose to over 20 knots and the sea became quite rough. Once past Harland point at first light we were able to sail on the right course without the engine. Vega was still banging down after being lifted by big waves which maintained the general discomfort. The weather forecast was for the wind to rise to F7 with rough seas off the Cornish coast and so we opted for some rest in Padstow rather than face an even worse night rounding Lands End.Looks like we will be here until Wednesday 15th July and so plenty of time to replace the zip on the sail cover, fine tune the Hydrovane and polish the topsides………………..
