It's amazing what a few degrees of latitude does to the climate. A few days ago we were sweltering in tropical heat. Today its a light fleece and long trousers and a duvet at night. It made me think of the February we went to Sweden to check on progress with Vega when she was being built. Just a few degrees to the north on the Swedish west coast it was minus 4 degrees but much drier than at home. The sea around the coast was frozen and Vega's launch was put back until May as the yard might still be frozen in April. I mentioned this to Pelle and Ulla on Loupan and they considered the west coast of Sweden to be damp and uncomfortable compared with Stockholm. I wonder if they have spent any time in the UK?
Today the wind is a steady 10kts or so from the SSE and S. This is the first time since the Caribbean that we haven't been able to sail directly towards our destination which, in this case, is due south. The favoured tack is to the west. To go south before now would have meant motoring into the wind and a north setting current. This current kept us on a more northerly heading than we would have liked during the night but at least we were saving fuel. The forecast is for very light wind over the next couple of days and we expect to be motoring for much of this time. We have enough fuel remaining for 3.5 days and so will be keeping a close eye on the engine hours and the fuel gauge.
Annie may be flying home ahead of me in order to get back in time for Sheri's funeral service. I will need to stay out here long enough to get all the work on the boat in hand. In anticipation of this we have started to sort out the cupboards to discard or take home anything we don't want left on board. It feels like this leg of our journey is coming to an end.
