We finally set sail at midday on 9th February having delayed a day in order to return our new freezer! It just wasn’t reducing the temperature and was running for hours without doing so. At the chandlery it was working perfectly of course and in the car on the way back. As soon as we put food in the problem reoccurred but by then it was too late and we left.
Had we known what we were in for we might have reconsidered. A trough of low pressure was forming right across our route. Late in the afternoon we were enveloped by a thunder squall with 30kts wind, instantaneous lighting and thunder. Once we emerged we could see wall to wall lightning ahead and so opted to motor north and south without daring to continue any further west. After midnight we did head west slowly under the genoa only and managed to not catch up any of the storms ahead.
The unexpected occurrence was that by using the generator when the engine was running and powering the freezer on 230V it seems to have kicked it into life! With the solar panels and the Duogen producing more than enough charge for the batteries we haven even been glad that the freezer has been using the surplus!
Much better day today with steady E and now SE wind.
