Today we are rushing south under mainsail and poled out genoa, blown along by 17kts of wind from the north. Tonight and tomorrow morning a trough (weather front) will pass through that apparently will bring torrential rain and the possibility of squalls with thunder and lightning. Joy! The wind will back right around to the south by tomorrow afternoon and then its just a case of heading to Opua as directly as possible.
There is an autumnal feel to the weather with bright sunshine but lower temperature. This is because the weather is much cooler in NZ than in the tropics (16 degrees at the moment). In fact it is the spring and summer is approaching - it just feels autumnal as we head south.
As I look out of the window there is a big mackerel sky with low dark cloud on the horizon. We'd better get that pole down before dark.
