On the way back to the boat, we stopped to visit the
world largest open-pit mine of copper located at Chuquicamata , 15 km North of Calama (2260 m or 7500’
above sea level)
Production of 700 to 800 tons of copper daily. The
mine, first started by US mining interests in 1910 is now runned by state owned
Codelco ( corporation national del cobre) .
Sur la route du retour, nous nous sommes arretes
pour une visite de la plus grande mine de cuivre a ciel ouvert du monde a
Chuquicamata, 15 km au nord de Calama (2260m
d’altitude). Production entre 700 a 800 tonnes de
cuivre par jour.Cette mine ouverte par des des interets US en 1910 a ete
nationalisee et est maintenant geree par Codelco

 Collateral damage, the old town of Chuquicamata has been totally evacuated
in 2007 due to new health laws and partially covered with mine gravels (right
hill).
Population moved to nearby Calama.
