Last night it appeared the wind was dying down but
no. Sitting here quite exhausted after a long night of 18 to 20kts of wind. The
wind wasn't a problem but the seas were quite uncomfortable and I had to shut
all hatches and ports and at this latitude that makes the cabin seriously
hot. There are 6 and a half hours to go for the 24 hour timing but we have done
164 nm since 3.30 yesterday. If we can keep up the pace the 200 mile day could
be had but the wind has eased already so who knows?
The sea was so lumpy and the boat was going so fast
that sleep in my berth was impossible. I found myself 3 feet above the bed
at one stage after we hit a wave so rather than pad up with safety gear (helmet
etc) for sleep it was easier to stay up. Had to go to the foredeck twice
during the night for maintenance issues and both times it was an exciting
mission. Amazing how hard you hang on when you are well aware of the
consequences of a slip, and yes I had my harness on but sometimes they can make
things harder when the strap gets caught on something forcing you to backtrack.
Touch wood, I haven't fallen off a boat yet with or without a harness. Falling
off with a harness in certain conditions could be very bad. Falling off is
really bad anyway but if you were attached to the harness you could get into a
situation where you were pinned against the side of the hull. Must jump
overboard one day and try out the different consequences, but maybe I'll wait
till I have crew!
