30th May - St Raphael to Cannes

With a mistral
threatening to start this evening and for the next few days we wanted to head
further East, which shouldn't be affected by the Mistral. We set off with a good
westerly breeze behind us of 15 knots, which rapidly increased. With just the
Genoa up the wind soon reached 30 knots and gusting up to 39 knots. Happily the
wind was coming just off the land so there was no sea to talk of and we whizzed
on at over 8 knots.
Having passed the
Bay of Agay the coast line turns North East and with it the wind
suddenly dropped and within half a mile it had turned through 180 degrees ie.
head on but happily only 8 knots of wind. I have never seen such a
change in wind.
The only consequence
of our fast sail and the howling wind is a slightly shredded Genoa - some of the
UV strip has torn. No too serious I hope.
Some pictures of us
entering Cannes.
