                | We finally left Port Guardian, which we found very
pleasant - picture are of the town at Port Guardian
and views over the Carmague. Forecasts of strong winds seem to have been
changed so we set off only to find a large Sthly swell, which together with a
stern west wind made for a very rolly ride - Alison wasn't too impressed with
the size of some of the rollers coming up our stern. Whilst we had all the sails up goose winging with
only 10/12 knots of wind didn't exactly send us on very quickly, so we did
some motor sailing to get us into Port Louis fairly early. Port Louis wasn't a very exciting place -
previously it had been the main access for canal traffic into the Rhone, but
most of this traffic goes elsewhere now leaving something of a ghost town and a
few boats (commercial and pleasure) going/coming from the Rhone into the
'Sea'. In the morning we awoke to find fire
engines on the harbour wall about 200 mts away - not that we had heard
anything - but about ten small boats had caught fire in the early
hours of the morning and all that was left was burnt out hulls sinking one by
one. Never did find out what had happened. We visited Navy Services & Port Napolean to
assess where to leave the boat for the winter. Having decided on Port Napolean
we moved the boat to the Port Napolean Marinan this morning dispite a Mistral
blowing which made mooring up some fun. Anyway we are now signed up to leave the boat here
in dry storage for the winter (actaully we have paid for a year as this will
cover us until April/May at a good price). Tomorrow I need to talk to some of the workshops
here - mainly English run - re some work needed over the winter, then off again
for a couple of weeks before returning end of Aug here. Plane has now been booked for us to return
home 2nd Sept. |
