The 20th
dawned bright and windless, we kept motoring until 0900, getting some help from
the light breeze, then it increased to 10-15 knots and we turned off the engine
and had a good day sailing at around 6 or 7 knots before having to start the
engine again at 1800. At this rate we shall be ok with regards diesel to reach
Horta and the nightly running of the engine keeps the batteries wll topped up.
We had a good day except we lost two fish! Fishermen we are not, the first
jumped off as soon as Joe started to reel him in and then ear;y this evening I
reeled in a massive mahi-mahi and got him right to the back off the boat, he
took a look at me and fought like hell, snapping the wire trace and disappearing
into the depths. Joe and I had had him cooked and eaten in our minds! Never
mind, try again tomorrow. Good copy on Herb again today and we are pushing on to
37deg North, already starting to feel the current helping us, should be
increasing our speed by 2 knots by morning. Herb also reckons we should be
getting a South West wind of 15-22 knots but so far only around 8-10, so here we
are at 0100 on 21st motor sailing at 7.4 knots, passed the half way
mark, all fit as fiddles, no doubt benefitting from a week of no alcohol, and
another 6 days to come. Hoping to arrive Horta 27th or
28th June. Nice pod of dusky dolphins this
evening.
