Bertha increasingly imposed herself on us through the
night and by morning we were still racing south n Bertha outer west and S west
winds of about 25ktsT. We didn't quite get to latitude 41 but 41:27 N was
enough. Through the morning the winds increased and at 12 noon we hove to
and took the mainsail down, still driving south on a tiny bit of jib. We were
then getting gusts of 36 kts App across the deck but the strongest winds only
lasted about an hour before we were putting the sails up again and heading back
north. She seemed to finally arrive, give us a short sharp smack with the edge
of her skirt and then race off again. I'm very glad we weren't a hundred
miles further north!
We raced south for 45 hours, worrying all the way and
covered 205 miles before we turned round average 4.5knots, which is pretty good
considering we ahd a calm patch in the middle where we motored or motor
sailed.
So she came and she went and we used the last of her spite
to give us a good start north before the calm we can see coming in the weather
forecast.
