Note this was written yesterday 3rdJune but could
not be sent due to very weak signal from iridium, probably atmospheric
conditions?
I now know what Newfoundland Grand Bank fog is
like. I had a great heading, direct to my Titanic waypoint when I ran into it and
it is quite amazing its so wet thatthe water runs off the sails as if it is
pouring with rain, but it is not raining, and it quite suddenly goes a really
wet cold. The atmosphere is almost spooky, you cannot see more than 100
yards and as soon as you poke your head above the the sprayhood you have about
20 seconds to look around before your glasses completely fog up. Some
chance of spotting an iceberg!
I got onto my comcen (communications centre,
military jargon!) and they told me I was getting too close to the iceberg area,
I was in the pink zone, sounds like M&S, and that I should head south
and keep east of Long 45W until I was south of Lat 40N, so last night and
today I have been beating south. Present position 41.5North;43West. Wind
steadily declining, now 7kts true coming directly from my waypoint, 40North;
45West, sog 2.5 to 3.0Kts, VMG only 1.5kts. At least the
weather is better and we have had a bit of sun today. Hurrah!!! AND I've a
dry bottom today, first time for weeks.
Once out of the fog it is warm and I have reverted
from just a fleece to underwear and shorts, I hope it holds, the good weather
Imean, the wind I would like just a litte more and with some east in it. Some
hopes, it always comes from the SW!
Needless to say the cabin still looks like a
chinese laundry with clothes and bedding hung everywhere I can string a line.
But don't complain we have got some drying done today between fog clouds, which have been reducing today, and I have had
periods when I can open the hatches and let the air through the
ship.
So all in all a much better day but we are not
going anywhere fast!
