After 40 days of howling winds always against us
arrival in american waters was just the opposite. As I approached
Nantucket the wind basically died and a lot of the time we just drifted with the
tide which is a bit worrying at times when you are in a channal with land on
either side of you. The winds were so light and variable that the 59 miles
to go in my last report took 38 hours. When I finally cleared Matha's Vineyard
Sound I could see the entrance to Newport 18 miles away. It took me 14 hours to
sail that last 18 miles; so near yet so far.
A couple of miles off and the wind finally filled
in and allowed me to sail in all sails flying and I was delighted to see Norm
and Diane waiting for me on the finish line and photographing my finish.
>From that point on my feet never touched the ground. As Norm lead us into the
club moorings the club canon fired a salute and all the vessels around tooted
thier horns and people waved a welcome, it was great!
Norm took me into the club bar a gave me lobster
salad and shortly after Paul and I were formally presented with the Newpot City
and Yacht Club Medal. Both Paul and I were asked to speak to a very
apprecitive and knowlegable audience. Newport hospitality is real,
everybody offering help and support.
In the evening I had dinner with Paul and his wife
Rosemary and we talked endlessly about our experiences, poor
Rosemary!
I plan to stay for the 4th July
celebrations and providing I get all my repairs done and weather permiting will
set off for the Azores on the 5th when I hope to continue this record of
events.
Thank you for following me and I will try to reply
to all your personal emails.
Love Poppa/Dad/Roger
