Hello, well Hurricane Arthur
kept us hanging about all week and nothing seemed to be happening, the wind was
light, the sun shone and Paul and I just had to be tourists. The forecast moved
the storm about all week and at one stage it was clasified as a catagory 2
but by the time it reached Newport it was cat 1 and the centre was 2/300
miles off shore.
Nevertheless on Thursday we
stripped everything
that could be moved off the deck to minimise the windage. Many people moved
their boats off the marina and onto moorings as the marina becomes
untenable. Hurricane Arthur, was due to pass by on Friday night and
Saturday morning and if it came right over us we would have had to get
digs for the night because if we'd got the full force of the hurricane we were
advised to leave the boat in case it broke free or another one breaks free and
hits it. Local people say if it is really bad it can cause havoc, so we
were watching very closely the course it took. As it turned out we
were on the outer edge of the hurricane force winds and where we were
moored it was deemed safe for us to stay on the boats. Unbeknown to us all the
launch services finished in the afternoon and when we arrived back at the club
at seven, services normally finish at 8.30, we had no means of getting on
board, both club and public launch services had stopped. We spoke to Rudy, Club
manager, an ex Harbour Master, and he pulled a favour for us and we were
transported out on a Habour Masters Launch. It was a rough trip and a
rough night, but we servived.
We were moored at the north
end of Goat Island between Rhode Island and Goat Island, you can look it up on
Google Earth if you wish.
The winds abated on
Saturday but we decided to wait till Sunday to let the sea die down; we are
setting off early Sunday Morning.
Love
Poppa/Dad/Roger.
