Thursday 20th. The position above is not
relavent it is just to get the blog in the right place Elaine has already posted
put the noon position.
I'm sorry it is late but I wanted to tell you about
this day but had no oportunity to do my blog yesterday.
It really started at 0400 whenhaving wrestled
with declining winds we were finally becalmed and I got a couple of hours
rest. Then by 06.30 there was just enough wind to get her going again. All
day long the wind went round and round the clock i.e. constantly change
direction and strength which meant I was on deck all day got no rest and little
to eat. Unlike when you have steady wind, what the sailors call a working
breeze, you can set her up and go and do something.
The benifit of always being on deck is you see more
of the oceans activity. I passed through two pods of large dolphins, may
have been the same ones the way I was going backwards and forwards.
AND THEN about 100 yards behind me this great
monster flew ourt of the water, completely clear, and crashed back into the
sea. I was surprised and alarmed because I could now see two more
coming close behind and they began to breach. By the time I came to my
senses and ran for my camera they had passed by. They
were humpbacks and they only breached when they were near me, once past me
the just swam normally. What a sight, something I have never seen before and so
close!!!
Later a fisherman came by with his long rods up in
the air and gave me a wave, seen my first american!
The wind continued to mess about but the sun shone,
the air was cold and I was just taking a picture of the beautiful sunset when I
realised I could see a ligthouse flashing in the view finder. I could see
America. When I looked more carefully I could just make out a low line of
land on the horizon.
By 11 o clock at night I was drifting, being
carried by the tide, into Nantucket shoals hoping the wind would come back to
allow me to navigate the channels.
That was my day!
Love Poppa/Dad/Roger
Ps I'll get up to date as quick as conditions
allow.
