Townsville is the second-biggest city in Queensland, after Brisbane. But it doesn’t feel like a big city. It is spread out around castle rock which is so named, I suppose, because it should have a castle on it. From some angles it looks just like the castle rock in Alicante.
Our mission for today was to walk up it, which we did, through steep streets past expensive homes on the hillside looking out to Magnetic Island. The views from the top were worth the exertion of getting there, with the airport, including the military airfield, to the north, and the port to the south. I counted 6 Apache gunships on the ground at the airfield along with transports and Chinooks. We got used to a fly past by military helicopters just after dark - training flights I suppose.
We walked down the other side, via the ‘Goat track’ into the business centre of the town. A stop for coffee then we walked as far as the ferry terminal and then caught the bus back to the campsite. We took a trip to Woolies to top up supplies but Fiona couldn’t resist looking in the ‘rejects’ shop where we got some cheap sun cream and a brush! This brush was something Fiona had been wanting for ages, to sweep our ‘patio’ (tarpaulin actually) which was constantly getting covered by leaves and ants. The simple pleasures...
