We’d been recommended to go to the Mooloolaba Surf club for dinner so that’s what we did. A professional set-up we were quickly signed in as temporary members and we soon decided we’d both go for the roast dinner buffet - beef, pork and chicken with veggies - we were offered the seniors discount straight away but Fi protested that she is not (yet) a senior so mine was $17 (about £9), hers was $20 - and I got a free ice cream!

We avoided the pokies hall on the way out and headed very full back to our van. In the morning we took a walk along the lovely beach and stopped at a cafe for breakfast. We lingered so long that we got a call from the caravan park telling us it was past check-out time so we hurried back and packed up the van and set course for the Gold Coast, a relatively short hop today but we’d allowed time for exploring.

We aimed to stay the night at a caravan park at the south end of the Gold Coast strip. We detoured off the M1 and headed for Main Beach and the Spit where we spotted the hotel used by ‘I’m a celebrity’, next to Sea World. We walked out to the end of the Spit and watched a pod of whales just offshore doing a bit of pec slapping, a nice yacht sailed in quickly with the tide and the surf schools set up on the beach, all in a temperature of about 23° with a pleasantly brisk onshore breeze. We can see why this place is popular even if some of it does look a bit like Benidorm (which actually isn’t as bad as its reputation!).

But we had to move on and as I write this we are getting in the mood for heading home, listening to Ken Bruce on the radio! Tomorrow we head for Coffs Harbour to stay with Grace and Grenville for a couple of days, then we are off to an Airbnb in Sydney for 4 days.
