Thursday 1st August

We only had to make our way over to Northeast Harbor this morning to pick up a mooring buoy and spend a couple of days doing the laundry, shopping and preparing Serafina for the arrival on Friday afternoon of Chris, Wendy and Jack Wreghitt who are over here in the USA visiting their daughter who is working down in Cape Cod and who are joining us for a couple of days sailing.

The weather is not looking too bright, but we will manage something I am sure.

We had a small problem finding the buoy we had been allocated, but mainly because they had said it was No. 423, but failed to mention that it did not have this number written on it only the name of the yacht whose mooring it is!  We passed Jane and David in their launch heading back out to their house on Great Cranberry Island as we settled into life in Northeast Harbor.  It is a very small town but it does have a reasonable grocery store and a very good chandlery and hardware store close to the water.

James and I went off to see the harbourmaster and the visitor centre next door. This proved interesting as they clearly do not cater or expect visitors to have arrived by sea! Bit odd for a small marina, but this island is a tourist haven I suppose. We were asked if we were Swiss (which has to be a first) and all suggestions about things to do here, presupposed that we had a car or might want to take a boat trip.

We found two other OCC boats in the small mooring field, ‘Galadriel’ with John and Angela and ‘Sweet Dreams’ with Al & Maggie. The later invited us all over for drinks in the evening and it was great to catch up with them and also glean information about new places to visit in Maine and what we can do when we get up to Nova Scotia. In addition, Al & Maggie have a mooring in Pulpit Harbor, on North Haven and told us that we are welcome to use it whilst they are away downeast.
