Tuesday 4th June

Tuesday dawned very sunny again, but the wind was blowing a healthy 15 to 18 knots from the north and the bulk of today’s journey was once again – north. But the first part saw us retracing our steps out of the Choptank River heading southwards, weaving through the incredibly shallow network of bays, before we once again found ourselves beating up the main part of the Chesapeake heading towards Annapolis. With the wind still coming out of the north at 15 plus knots, it was a great sail across a pretty smooth body of water and in weather like this you can see the attraction of sailing here in the Chesapeake Bay. But as ever, the wind died away in the early afternoon and so whilst Sarah was below busy making Tiramisu for the rally BBQ, we motored the final few hours to Shadyside, Maryland.

Again this involved making our way gingerly for a mile or so, in barely 3 metres of water to an anchorage conveniently located at the bottom of a garden belonging to a cousin of Sid and Rebecca who are organising the rally. Here we had a tremendous BBQ with far too much food and marvelled that this beautiful home and garden was just the owner’s holiday home!  Martin from Caduceus played his bagpipes as the sun went down with a spectacular sunset, accompanied by the house owner’s dog ‘Tiller’ who howled like a wolf throughout.
