Sunday 25th August

Another glorious day, but very still in the bay so we planned to do some jobs around the boat and then head down to Boothbay Harbor via Port Clyde on Tuesday.

This fell apart when Iain & Fiona called by in their dinghy and said that they were heading over to Wreck Island in the afternoon and if we chose to go there as well, we were invited to dinner! It took a few nano-seconds to work out the answer and so at 1430 hours we weaved our way back out through the rocks, islands and lobster buoys that guard the twisting entrance to this lovely anchorage.

We enjoyed a great sail across to Merchant’s Row with Flossie doing sterling work and helping us along at a very respectable pace. These islands are thick with the lobster buoys and slaloming through them is hard enough at the best of times, but with Flossie up visibility is rather reduced added to which there are the ever real dangers of the multitudes of rocks and ledges that litter the narrow routes between the islands and outcrops. Not a sail for the fainthearted for sure!

We found our way to the northern side of Wreck Island and dropped the anchor and were joined shortly afterwards by Ruffian. We had another great evening with them although their enthusiasm for Mexican Train did diminish when Iain found himself doing rather less well this time – beginner’s luck seemed to have departed early.
