Sunday 7th July

Another 0600 hour start, this time to catch the tide through the Cape Cod Canal. This is the world’s widest sea level canal and started life in 1914 and it played an important part in both of the World Wars as it protected shipping from the U boats lurking offshore at Cape Cod, cutting 135 miles off the trip at the same time.

The tide rips through here and so we enjoyed a sleigh ride on top of a 4 knot current which meant that we travelled the 7 mile cut in no time at all and emerged into Cape Cod Bay for the 20 mile sail to Provincetown.

The wind was light and pretty much behind us again, so we used our new sail and we were delighted with its performance and ease of use. Sadly though, the wind gradually died away and once our speed had dropped to below 2 knots, we reluctantly started the engine and made our way to the huge bay at Provincetown. We anchored almost exactly where we did last year and settled down to a restful afternoon, with Sarah hoping for a visit by a Right Whale! We did have a group of some 5 or 6 seals swimming near us but they did a good job of evading Sarah’s attempts to capture them on film.

We plan to stay here tomorrow and then move on to Boston on Tuesday, but almost certainly via the Stellwagen Bank where all the whale watching boats congregate daily.
