Fri, Sat, Sun & Mon – 28th, 29th, 30th June & 1st July

Not much to write home about from Jamestown this year. The weather has been truly dreadful with strong winds, a very unpleasant chop along with contrary tides have made the anchorage a fairly unpleasant place to stay.  But our friends Craig & Karene were here and so we opted to spend a few days with them as well as calling on other friends Dave and Judy Enstone who live on the island.

Dave and Judy invited us to join them for a film premier about a Nordhaven going through the North West Passage, in Newport on Saturday night, but we had to cancel as shortly before they were due to come and pick us up from the quay, the conditions in the part of the anchorage where we were situated became untenable (the boat was literally pirouetting in a strange tidal swirl, ending up stern to the strong winds!), so we had to raise the anchor and move quickly. Our timing was pretty good as we had barely dropped the anchor in a much better location given the wind conditions, than a dense fog dropped in and we could not see anything at all.

We took advantage during the stay here to use the laundrette and pretty good grocery store as well as the public library with its strong wifi. They are all a healthy walk up the hill from the bay so some exercise has been taken as well!

On Sunday we went to New Bedford to visit the excellent whaling museum there. We had planned to call in at New Bedford when we sail north later in the week, but Craig and Karene offerred to drive us there which  was too good an offer to miss, especially as it is not easy to get a mooring in the town. As chance would have it, Craig & Karene had to return pretty early for a dinner date and we met up with Dave and Judy who were also visiting New Bedford, but for a different purpose altogether. We went with them to a wonderful deli situated on an industrial estate and filled the boot of his car before moving onto a very good art exhibition showing works by one of Dave’s staff.

But the main story here is the very poor weather and whilst parts of the USA are suffering wildfires, droughts and record temperatures, we are coping with all the horrid, wet and miserable stuff.

We are heading up the bay to Bristol on Tuesday to join a few friends for the 4th July celebrations there.
