Sunday 3rd Nov – Mon 4th Nov

Well at long last there has been a decisive gap in the weather and the fleet has largely chosen to head off south on Wednesday, but along with a few other ‘old heads’ we have opted for a Tuesday morning start as this gets us clear across the Gulf Stream ahead of a big cold front that will bring us 30 to 40 knot winds. We don’t get to dodge the bullet, but we should be clear of the Stream hopefully as that will be truly horrid! The weather forecaster seems to think that we all crave high winds and big seas, whereas 10 to 15 knots sound just perfect to us.  It may take us longer than planned but we now have the sails to help us along if the winds become very light, so hopefully we will be in the British Virgin Islands in under two weeks.

We have a had a great time here and it has been nice to spend a bit of real time with old friends and new ones and we will be very sad in so many ways to head off from the USA for the last time. Mind you it has been bitterly cold these past few days and we are very much looking forward to getting across the Gulf Stream to where we should find warmer weather and air. Give it a couple of weeks and we will be moaning about the excessive heat.

Sarah celebrated her birthday today and it was nice that we were not out at sea as had been planned. Various kind souls felt the need to sing Happy Birthday but the prize for the loudest and least tuneful must go to Team Ruffian.

Happy to get emails as we are cruising along out there as they do beak the boredom – assuming we are not being pounded by the cold front or 40 knot squalls! But please no html files or attachments and only use the rob {CHANGE TO AT} rhbell {DOT} com address.

We will try to post our position daily and update the blog as we go along – always assuming there is something cheerful to write about.
