Robernathy pty, your mobile fishing supplier.

As I have mentioned before, Rob is a keen and successful fisherman (well that what he says and that’s what we are hoping) so we now have 2 rods on board, increasing our chances of success by at least 100%.

In the run up to the trip, Rob spent his days tracking down and buying various lures. As you may, or may not, know, different lures attract different fish. So Rob tried to get the lures he thought would best fit the ocean we were to sail in. Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Tuna and Grouper being the most likely, so we have an attractive selection of lures designed to tempt them aboard.

There are a couple of other factors to consider when purchasing lures, size, colour and of course, price.

You have to resist the temptation to buy the big ones, because you have to imagine what they are capable of catching and how you will a/ get it on board, b/ kill it, c/ fillet it d/ eat it and e/ store the rest of it. But you can go for your life when it comes to buying the pretty ones. They are glittery, sparkling, lurid coloured contraptions, so you have to think like a fish, would that look tasty? It’s definitely a science.

When we set sail from Bocas del Toro, Rob was itching to get his new rod out. Sheralee and I liked the pretty pink lure, which we named Tuhlula, so that was what went overboard.

A short while later, the reel started paying out big time. Rob jumped up to grab the rod, but whatever was on the other end had decided it did not want to come aboard and went straight down. Rob fought, but the line was paying out and paying out. There was no way we would have ever been able to bring this baby in, especially when it bit the line and took off with the lovely Tuhlula!!! 1 lure down!!!!

Now that’s the tough part of fishing, you get attached to your lures, not just because they are quite expensive, but also because they are pretty and or efficient and effective.

So Rob decided that we needed to get more lures, after all it was a long trip and we needed his catch to survive!!!

Well, when we arrived in Balboa we took a cab to Abernathy’s, which is a fishing, marine and sea store.

Just a quick aside. If you come to Balboa and need a cab, you could do a lot worse than calling Snr Diose Pineda. He charges $10 an hour, which is a good rate considering most fares in town are $10 anyway. His number is 64926807 or 67786399. He doesn’t speak much English, but he has good local knowledge and is polite, friendly and reliable.

So we walked into Abernathy’s, I kid you not, it was like a toy store, with hundreds of rods and lures and much, much more. Rob’s little face lit up like a child on Christmas day.

An hour or so & $225 later Rob left with half the store in his bag.

We reckon he is going into competition with Abernathy’s and setting up his own, mobile fishing store, which we have called Robernathy’s.

After his success last trip with the Bahamian Sling, Roger bought himself a spear gun. So between them they should be able to feed the 4 of us, well they have no possible excuse not to now.
