A beautiful, clear
and calm day saw us slip lines and motorsail the 30 or so miles to St Augustine,
the oldest continuously inhabited and most attractively maintained town in the
US. Funny, we bought new sails when we first got Beaujolais, but have used them so little I find myself
wondering how the last lot ever wore out?
Lots of fishing boats
but WOW, while passing through a Right Whale protection area, we were honoured
to be given a 15 minute display of a whale feeding. It’s at times like that you
wished you had an SLR camera on board. The digital camera just couldn’t cope
with the distance. The whale was majestically rising out of the water, scooping
up gallons in its open mouth before splashing back down. A short while later you
would see the water spout and then it would rise up again. It was a beautiful
sight. We reported the sighting to the US coast guard (mandatory),and carried on to
St
Augustine.

We anchored in front
of the fort and just as the sun was setting, we heard a huge BOOM from the canon
on the ramparts – we were under attack, being fired upon – by the British!
Damned unfriendly if you ask me!

We enjoyed
what for both of us is one of the pleasures of cruising, a peaceful night
at anchor.
