We had noted that there were severe strong wind - and
seas - warnings being issued for both Martinique and Dominica (our planned next
stop towards the north) and given the inexperience of our new crew decided it
would be prudent not to attempt the 35 mile crossing in open sea
We also discovered that it would be carnival
for the next few days and Fort de France would have one of the biggest - so we
lifted the anchor and headed south
We stopped overnight at a small fishing village named
Case Pilote - about half way back to F-d-F and eventually found good and
sheltered holding ground in a bay slightly to the north. The old village (with
Martinique's oldest church) was deserted as most have gone to celebrate the
beginning of carnival in F-d-F and we caught the last drinks before sunset as
the staff packed up to get the ferry to the celebrations
The winds had increased and were gusting over the hills
and as we had dragged earlier Chris sat anchor watch overnight
