A rather frustrating night with light zephyrs of wind,
occasional squalls with no wind but sometimes lots of rain meant that we were
rather pleased to see the dawn bring the sun to warm us up and dry the
decks and cockpit. This lead to another quiet wind day but we have been busy
preparing Associate for a couple of boysterous days of winds from the direction
we are going in as the unseasonal low that we mentioned in previous blogs
finally reaches us. Hopefully we are far enough south to be able to skirt around
the bottom in the lighter winds and then pop out the other side into the NE
trade winds that we have been seeking. Hopefully this will be on Monday
following a quiet Sunday.
Every day at noon we listen into the long range (SSB)
radio net for the ARC boats. The area of our net now has yachts spread over an
area the equivalent of Ireland. Each day we share position information and wind
and sea conditions and general chat. There are reports of a hump back whale
spending an hour alongside a boat and another skipper reported the capture
of a 7.5 kg tuna. As today was Thanksgiving several US boats reported on the
seasonal meal that they were going to enjoy tonight but the news that the fleet
had been waiting for was that the dog that is on one of the boats ( a cat!) had
finally done the business and was now wagging his tail a lot
more. Collectively we are not sure about the wisdom of taking a dog on such a
large voyage
We have thoroughly enjoyed being visited by huge pods of
dolphins some leaping out of the water and flashing their tails - 'Flipper'
style. Our fishing has been singularly unsuccessful so far but we hope to report
more success soon
