We left Cascais at about 08:30 and motored out towards
our next goal - Sines (pronounced 'cinch')- a large commercial harbour some 50
odd miles to the south. At about 10:30 we were visited by an energetic
pod of dolphins who, much to our delight, stayed with us for about 15
minutes playing in our bow wave. At about noon the expected afternoon north
west trades kicked in and we took the main down and unrolled our new blue water
downwind sail. It proved to be everything that had been promised - easy to
control and use and behaved really well even with some changes of direction of
the wind. We completed the remainder of the trip under sail and pulled into
Sines harbour just before 17:00
Vasco de Gama was born here in the castle - but I am not
sure what he would make of it now as it is a petrochemical terminal and large
commercial port! However it has a marina and an attractive old town and you soon
forget about the other horrid bits......an excellent fresh fish supper was
washed down by a bottle of chilled Vinho Verde - an excellent way to
end the day
