We crossed the border from Spain to Portugal with a good sail along with several other boats coming out of the Rias. Our next stop was a real surprise - we had just regarded it as a transit industrial port where we would just rest the night and move on. Viana do Castelo turned out to be a real star of a town steeped in Portuguese history of ship-makers, traders and explorers. It was so important as a trading place with England in 16th century we even had a consulate there.

It is amazing how different a place and people can feel only 40 miles down the coast and in a different country

We tied up alongside a Dutch yacht being sailed by a like minded couple on their way to the Med and enjoyed a good brexit led fun conversation

Our first bottle of Vinho Verde having been purchased to replace the Spanish Albariño we retired to the boat for supper very pleased that the night club - aptly named "Insomnia" was only open on Fridays and Saturdays!
