King Edward Point
King
Edward Point, Southern Ocean, South Georgia Captain
James Cook, ‘ the wild rocks raised their lofty summits till they were lost in
the clouds and the vallies laid buried in everlasting snow. Not a tree or shrub
was to be seen.’ Gosh
he was not wrong for this place of Southern Ocean Antarctic convergence zone, a
wild wonderful panorama of nature at its finest. We checked into King Edward
Point jetty under the shadow of the memorial cross of Shackelton. King penguins
and fur seals all about. A mighty Elephant seal moulting in the tussock grass.
Albatross the size of Jumbo jets, Ice Bergs of the South Pole aground the bay.
Sky twisted into piles of lenticular cloud deflecting of the mountains far
above. Government
Officers Kirin and Robert sorted our paperwork. We were tied tight to the
concrete jetty for the evening in this far away splendour.
