Robinson Crusoe Island
Juan Fernandez Island, South Pacific 33.38.40S

Arrived Cumberland Bay for lobster season October
1st. Friendly fisherman in long open boats guided us to the softest water and
watched our anchor down to safety. A
tremendous horizon of mighty jagged mountains all around us, their fingers
stretched into the clouds above a dense carpet of deep green trees. Thousands of
fish enjoying shade under the town quay in crystal clear water. The monthly
cargo ship ferrying supplies ashore by big rib. Then wheelbarows all about the
place. Navy Armada Toyoto 4x4 with raised wheels for the narrow concrete road.
Met the headmistress and took English class in the school, met the
vicar who is also the postmaster and began exploration of this fabulous
island. Walks to the old Spanish fort, ancient caves, the mountain top look out
of Robinson Cruseo himself. A survival sheler built for Girl Guides 100
year celebrations.
Robinson Crueso statue stands tall in the town
square and has enough inspiration to fill the heart of the wounder of
this remote paradise rarely visited.
