Bahia Aguire Argentina

Hollinsclough - Is the World Round?

Feb 4th An early morning start bound for the Island of de los Estados on a ninety mile run but gale winds drove us a little short.

Leaving Isla Lennox, Chile for fairly neutral water with a good wind behind. The sea was white and frothy clearing the north of Isla Nuevo and the swell growing to 3 metres high. A large red fishing ship slowly pushed back the water trawling head long into the building wind. The gauge toped out at forty five point two knots for a forecast of fifteen to twenties. Full gale on the stern by lunch time, Appropriately placed south of Bahia Sloggett with forty miles on the log enough was enough.

Easy option was the Argentinean anchorage of Bahia Aguire on the north side of the Chanel on Tiera del Fuego, wide berth of Kinnaird point, rocks and kelp then a little push back into Punta Pique to pass a large ship buoy bouncing about in the outer swell. Made for the grey shingle beach and dropped the metal rope in about five meters of water at half the tide. Dug, locked and snatch rope on we took in the view. Trees all about on big green hillsides, not seen those for a while. So much more homely than the barren lands of Cape Horn. Sunshine and sea spray for some window cleaning in between hail and snow storms. A variety of old derelict houses and shacks stood along the beach but otherwise the place was devoid of all but us.
