OOJAH's AWESOME ODYSSEY

From Winter Harbour we returned to Northeast Harbour on Mount Desert Island, visited Bar Harbour & some more gardens & did a little trekking onto the highest ground on the Eastern seaboard - unbelievably only 1300' but the views across the islands were stunning.
We we're able to visit the more remote Little Cranberry Island, Frenchboro on Long Island, & Isle au Haut in the immediate area before 2 days of Northerly winds enticed us into setting off back towards Portland. These are very different to the places we visited on our way 'out East' with small communities sustained by lobster fishing & a conspicuous absence of wealthy second homes, tourists or retail opportunities. It looked to be a harder life & the winters would be quite challenging! The northerly winds gave us the best 2 days sailing we've had in a month but after a delightful stop at Christmas Cove we're weathered in for the weekend by strong sou'westerlies, between the 2 islands of Orrs & Bailey, 10nm East of Portland. A member of the Orrs-Bailey yacht club came out & invited us to join them ashore before dinner & we're now all briefed on the local hostelries (lobster bars!) & ready for action.

With love from Peter & Christene
