The 4 1/2 hour train journey inland to Marrakech was an unexpected bonus. We couldn't get seats in 1st class (air conditioned) but we learned more about the country from talking to the locals "down the back" & appreciated the vastness of this fascinating but often very barren country. Marrakech itself was heaving both with locals & Western tourists - we stayed in a Riad, a kind of b&b with a handful of rooms around a central courtyard with a plunge pool, located very centrally inside the medina. We trudged round some of the highlights clutching our Rough Guide trying not to get lost. The Moroccans are delightful, always friendly & welcoming & (usually) not too pushy. It is now 35C but it's beautifully cool in the Riad & I write this from in the pool. After 2 days tomorrow we drive up to the High Atlas.
