OOJAH's AWESOME ODYSSEY

We were a bit apprehensive about the 30nm beat upwind to St Barts as we've not had to tack since February but once we'd got used to not being able to read because of the heel & expectation of a wave coming over the side the 4 hours passed quickly enough.
We anchored off the capital Gustavia. In 1784 the Swedes got possession in exchange for giving the French questionable trading rights into Gothenburg. They made good money operating it as a free port during all the fighting, but sold it back to the French in 1877 when everything had quietened down & there was no further profit to be made. St Barts is now an expensive upmarket French island & any retail aspirations Christene had we're soon dashed - even a 2 ltr bottle of fresh milk was €8 (only organic available). The annual regatta was on & it was good to see a J122 leading the fleet. After a couple of days we sailed North to Anse du Colombier, a delightful spot off the beaten track, & enjoyed the cliff walks before heading off for St Martin.
