We are now into our fourth day here and it is still blowing hard and not expected to calm down until the weekend. The big boats of the fishing fleet have only being going out by day rather than for the whole week. The sea has built up into quite a frenzy and although it may be possible to sail downwind in 25 knots the swell of 3 to 4 metres is untenable. To make matters worse we have two capes to go round on our next passage and the swell will be even greater----so we are sitting tight. Meanwhile one of the boats decided to leave on Sunday against all advice and motor sail north to Figueira de Foz. He was back 10 hours later looking rather dishevelled having reached Foz only to find the black balls flying at the harbour entrance indicating that the harbour was closed as the swell over the sand bar entrance made entry too dangerous---- a nice day sail! In actual fact many of the harbours were closed because of swell.
The marina here closed this morning as it is now full but entry is still possible because of the deep trench (2,700 metres) right up to within 100 metres of the entrance which flattens the swell. Since then four boats have arrived and they are now alongside the old concrete fishing wharfs and having to adjust their lines all the time to adjust for the tide rise and fall.
We hired a car yesterday with Ian and Carole from Maximilian (Moody 47) and went to the abbey at Bathala------ a very gracious and beautiful abbey. We saw the tomb of Henry the Navigator. We came back via Alcobaca and saw the church which was more like Durham Cathedral, vast stone columns. A visit to the Continenti supermarket brought us all back to earth but we needed to replenish beer and wine supplies so that we can drown our sorrows whilst listening to the wind which has just hit 39 knots on the boat next door!!!
Photos to follow when I ( Mark) have worked out how to downsize them again!
