"4th July - River Fowey"
We waved good-bye to our lovely Dutch family as
they left Falmouth early this morning. We have met them at
several ports on our travels, as they too sailed the Atlantic circuit. We
hope that we shall meet up with them again as they sail up the Channel on
their way back to Holland.
A couple of hours later we too left Falmouth.
The forecast was for winds force 3-4 decreasing later and fog patches which
would also clear. Once round St Antony Head in patchy fog and unsure
of our destination, we finally decided that the following wind would be
ideal for the shorter passage to Fowey and who knows the sun
might just come out. Our vacillations are due
to being torn between hurrying home because the weather has been cold
and dull since our arrival in the UK or pottering slowly back so as to enjoy the
west country. Today's throw of the dice favoured a slow return home.
After several hours of foggy patches
with occasional glimpses of the coast we arrived at the entrance to the
River Fowey in sunshine. This is more like it, a castle and fort
guard the entrance to the harbour and the pretty grey slated town hangs down
over the river with holiday makers wandering along the quayside, small
boats ferry visitors on river trips, yachts and small day boats hang
off the many mooring buoys in the wide natural harbour. Leaving the
town behind us, we motored on up the river, avoiding the chain ferry loaded
with cars and trucks as it crossed the river in front of us
to off load its passengers on the other side of the river, so that
they can continue on their journey using this short cut. We found a
beautiful spot to moor up on one of the several visitors pontoons
dotted up and down the river. It is close to the shore which is
lined by a woods and on the far side of the river the commercial China
Clay Works lies at peace today.
We are very content and happy to be able to enjoy
the sounds of a river once again!
