"At Sea Day 3"
We are making good progress and have managed to
sail east quickly enough to get out of reach of the south moving storm. We
reefed the headsail before night fall as a precaution and were amazed yet again,
as Whisper gathered speed with this reduced rig. All night she has been
cruising along in a force 4 at speeds between 6 - 8.3k, which makes we wonder
why the sailing fraternity insist on large sails?
The only marine life sightings have been Portuguese
Man of War, heading for Bermuda, these are a form of jelly fish which stay on
the sea surface. Their purple transparent sail pushes them along the
surface, below hang their tentacles which can be several meters long and are
covered with stinging cells, which give a very nasty and painful sting.
They use these cells to stun their prey so have very few predators, except
for a giant squid which has the ability to take the poison from the
Portuguese Man of War and store it in its own tentacles. A type of
fish mugging with theft!
Today's mileage count will be about 153nm, the seas
are gentle, the sky is blue and life is good on board!
